I returned from the Peace Corps to the US in 1978 to pursue a masters program in Int'l Development. I recall very heated & emotional discussions between Arabs & Israelis in the class on Int'l Relations. The professor was brilliant & resolute, affirming that threats/insults would not be tolerated but that a university should be the safe place where such discourse is possible. Where else would it be?

If you attend university your primary sense of identity should not be as an activist, a trans, a Jew or anything else. It should be as a student which, in turn, means as a truth-seeker. That journey is never complete and your duty is to retain an open mind forever. The certainty demonstrated by activist students is a sign that they are not learning.
